Module 5 Logo

Step 1
Step 2
Step 3
Final

1. Discuss what you thought about creating your logo.
2. Describe the process: creative thinking skills and ideas you used in the logo creation.

At first I really didn't know what to do for a logo. I mean I see logos everyday and everywhere I look but in order to describe myself I didn't know where to begin. The process I used was I asked a couple of buddies to explain me in just a couple words. I used their responses as well as ones I thought of myself to design the logo and get a good overview of what I thought best expressed me.

3. What was the most important discovery you made in the creation of your logo?

With the responses I got from my peers, the things that they had thought about me and the impact I make on their life is what I thought was one of the best discoveries.

4. What is the most important information you learned from watching the videos, powerpoint, and reading material  for this project? What is your opinion of the videos?

The materials were very helpful in my process. I skimmed through the majority of the resources but the main one I used was from the video "Graphic Design". It was pretty interesting seeing how graphic designers work. I was able to figure out exactly what a logo was and how to emphasize certain points with the small amount i wanted to portray in my logo.

Art Gallery Visit

A.) Which artworks make an impact or impression on me? Why?

One of the first artworks that made an impression on me was a newer artwork (2013) by Jason Middlebrook entitled "Underlife", At first glance the artwork made me think of the tree branches raising out of the ground then I thought to myself how the tree branches support the main stump. I then noticed the title, and then felt the creativity used was very cool.

Another artwork that was cool was by John Ahearn entitled "Pinwheel" from the year 1998. The artwork shows hands formed in a circle all angled in a way to create the circle. I'm not really sure what drew my attention but the symbolism shown was enough to get me to stop and look at it.

B.) Which artworks do I feel a connection with? Why?

Almost every artwork I looked at the first thing I do is relate it to something in my life so almost all of them I could connect with. One example which is obvious I feel everyone can connect with is by Idelle Weber, an artwork from 1962, entitled "Reflection". The contrast and value in this artwork focus solely on an individual sitting and clearly  reflecting on something. I have personally been in this situation where I sat and just thought about many things in life and I felt like this artwork very well expressed that feeling.

Another example of something I was able to connect with was an artwork from 1870 of and entitled "Niagara Falls" by and unknown artists.. I was instantly able to relate to the artwork seeing as I have seen the view pictured multiple times as it is one of my favorite places to visit. It is all very cool because it was a hand colored engraving, but what I liked most about it was how the artist was able to portray the mist of the waterfall. It's hard for me to explain but the mist almost looks like it connects with the clouds above and it just looks very cool.

C.) Which artworks would I like to know more about? Why?

Almost all artwork that I completely don't understand I would love to ask the artist what they art trying to portray or emphasize. I immediately thought that while viewing an artwork from Joaquin Torres-Garcia from 1943 entitled "Arte Abstracto A Cinco Tonos Y Complementarios". I was able to look up the meaning of the title which means something along the lines of Abstract art with five tones and complementary. That alone really described the artwork in a way I didn't understand at first. However, still looking at the artwork I would like to know if the different shapes, colors, and lines used are in a way to portray something of interest by the artist.

Another artwork I would like to know more about is relatively newer piece by Andy Goldsworthy entitled "Path" from the year 2012. The artwork pictures a darkened, shaded atmosphere with contrast to the path for emphasis leading from one side of the artwork to the other. I'm just curious as to whether the artist is trying to explain things in general of how we take a guided path to most things or if it was to explain something that had happened to him personally that he is trying to explain through the artwork; very interesting to me.

Overall this was my first experience at an art gallery and I really enjoyed myself. I was able to see a variety of artwork from a vast amount of artist. The amount of information I learned from the employees was also great!

Module 4

1. Discuss what you thought about creating the Value Scale and Color Wheel.

I never really worked with paint too much so creating a color wheel was pretty cool seeing how the colors mix to create others. The Value scale was harder than it looked and really showed different levels of shading.

2. Which media did you enjoy working with the best and why?

Like I stated in the previous question; I haven't worked with paint to much so that was more enjoyable.

3. What was the most important discovery in the creation of these studies?

The biggest discovery I found was how to mix certain colors to get different ones.

4. What is the most important information you learned from watching the videos for this project? What is your opinion of the videos?

The videos became useful when I was creating the color wheel because I wasn't positive which colors made the desired colors I wanted. The video provided a great demonstration on how to create my project.

At first learning about the elements and principals of art was good and all, but trying to understand what it all meant without looking at pictures was a little difficult for me. I was very confused when I first read the definitions of the elements and principals. I started a couple pictures at a time and looked up elements of art using different sources. Then from there I went out and took many pictures. After the first few it finally clicked with me and then it became troublesome at points deciding what element fit best! I then went from the pictures I had just taken and then looked back at old albums I had saved then got side tracked for a very long time, but looking at old pictures and being able to look at them artistically was very cool. I gained a huge understanding by going hands on with this assignment.

Module 3

1. Describe Color and it's effects on emotions. Use the appropriate vocabulary of color in your posting.

Color stands out as one of the most pleasurable elements when looking at something. Studies have shown that color affects a wide variety of psychologocial and physiological responses. For example, a stop sign is painted red. Many people associate red with danger/stop/negative. Then if you paint a stop sign green, how would that affect many people?

Looking in more of a emotions point of view, red and pink are often colors associated with love/valentines day. Now go ahead and change the colors to that of black and blue... The emotional difference varies greatly.

2. What is a theoretical aspect of color that most intrigues/fascinates you? Why?

Through the website provided, I was very fascinated with value. When you adjsut the intensity of the activity provided it alters your eyes to see dots that aren't even there. Very interesting to me on how that works and I wonder how much that affects my daily life and I don't even realize it.

3. In the Color video, what made the biggest impact on you in regards to color and it's effects on emotions?

It really amazed me the kind of effects something as simple as the color of something can even overall change its meaning and how we view it. For example June Redfern really wanted her painting to capture the feel of Venice but you could tell it's not what she wanted. The fact the I looked at the minor changes she made I was able to feel the color difference in my emotions.

4. In the Feelings video, what made the biggest impact on you in regards to color and it's effects on emotions?

I never really look at a darker area of things such as work of Francisco Goya and his "darker" works of art. This type of theme really gave off a weird but interesting vibe to me. The darker colors and the more depressing vibes given off from these works really impacted a negative vibe of darkeness.

Module 2

1. For each video and article list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

Article- I feel like the main idea is the way of how everyone's brain works. Looking at art many brains will see certain of the same things however, seeing as everyone's brain is different, some will see some different things that stick out.

Carta video- Ramachandran and Changeux explain different views of how art is interpreted from the brain. From how we choose to see art and how we just naturally look at it without thinking.

Aesthetics video- This showed many different philosophies over different time periods and how each of them are unique and present different ideas in each different person.

2. Which philosopher's theroy on aesthetics do you feel is most important? Be sure to mention the philosphers name, era (time in history), and contribution to the aesthetic theory in your response.

I really think that Plato had a huge impact of his philosophy of aesthetics. Dating back to before 400 BC in Greece. He really focuses on the beauty in the art. To me, the true understanding of art comes from beauty and that is what people will understand from the artwork which is why I feel it is important.

3. What do you think about Changeux and Ramachandran scientific view of aesthetics and art? What was the most interesting fact you discovered from each speakers lecture?

Ramachandran had many interesting facts. One that stuck out the most was when he showed three similar pictures. One was drawn by an eight year old child, one by Leonardo Da Vinci, and a third by 7 year old autistic child. It showed how the autistic child's drawing could be more beautiful and less cluttered due to isolationism.

Jean-Pierre Changeux really came off dull to me. It was just hard overall to follow along. I was interested in learning about the brain and what different emotions cause the brain to do.

I feel like Ramachandran pointed out how we feel about the art when we look at it while Changeux was a more in depth of how we understand the art from our brain without having any kind of bias towards the art.

4. How do the videos and article relate to the readings in the text?

While I first read the book some of the ideas and concepts were a little hard to understand. However, the video's helped because I was able to visibly able to see examples and understand different examples and come to a better understanding.

5. What is your opinion of the films and article? How do they add depth to understanding of the topics in your reading in the text?

The films in my opinion were very helpful. I really learned a lot from Vilayanur Ramachandran and Jean-Pierre Changeux. Some points of the video were even funny which helped keep my attention. The videos along with the article provided much more examples for me to understand. Especially in the videos I was able to see step by step on different topics.
