Module 10 Video Review

1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.

I chose the videos of African Art and Buddhism. I chose African Art because it has always interested me because how much it relates to African Culture and it comes off very unique to me. I chose the video on Buddhism because I have always been interested in the Buddha you see all over the place and wanted to learn more about it as a whole.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

African Art- This video discusses how traditions of art were a huge part of daily life and ranges how the culture is expressed ranging from sculptures, masks, architecture, masks and many other things. One of the most interesting things I learned was how African art had such a huge influence to others, even those such as Picasso and other modernist painters.

Buddhism- This video talks about how Buddhism began starting all the way back of it's birth back in India. I learned that the largest Buddhist shrine is located in Indonesia and another one right here in New York State!     Another key fact is that within 100 years of Buddha's death, Buddhism then split into two groups; "Hinayana" and "Mahanyana"

3. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text? 4. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?

These videos related to the text by providing some of the same samples and ideas behind that read in the text. The African video specifically went into more details on how props and other cultural symbols are directly symbolized by the African Art. I always like watching the videos as all the main topics and ideas are represented more fully with visual examples and help clear any topics I am touchy on.

Art Making/Material Exploration Drawings - Exploring Line

1. What was it like using your hand as subject matter for a drawing?

It was awkward because I could not position myself without using both hands as the subject matter was my hand. Just a different way of sitting especially when I had to draw with my non-dominant hand, it became a little more difficult.

2. What media did you select - pencil or charcoal? Why?

I used charcoal as I was sitting with my girlfriend in her art studio class at UB and she had it readily available and I never really worked with charcoal so I used it for one of my first times.

3. How did it feel to create a drawing with your non-dominant hand?

As I stated before it was pretty tough as I never use my non-dominant hand for drawing especially when I can't use my dominant hand for anything because I needed to look at it and keep it in place the entire drawing.

4. Compare and contrast your final drawings. Do you think they are successful studies?

Although I had to use different hands to draw, I feel as if my drawings look somewhat similar in quality. I really took my time when using my non-dominant hand however, as I knew it would be tougher to achieve the same quality as that of my dominant hand. However, I do think different creations can be performed simply by using a different hand, and if the subject matter I was reproducing was a larger scale the drawings would be much more variant.

5. Would you consider using your non-dominant hand to create artwork in the future?

Probably not, as I said it took much more time using my non-dominant hand and obviously the quality will not be near that of my dominant hand, however I think i would possibly use it for a draft or something similar for ideas.

Module 9

1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.

The two videos I selected were completely randomly the first two. I guess I also sided with these both Michelangelo video as well as Leonardo da Vinci because obviously they are both very popular artists I have learned about over the years and wanted to know a little more extra info on them.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

Michelangelo- The video allowed me to understand and visualize the work of Michelangelo while he was in the preparatory stages of his work and how he developed them into his final works.  It also went into the different styles and works that are not commonly known and they were all very interesting.

Leonardo da Vinci- The video analyzes Leonardo's life from the very beginning. With all of the different styles and different work he produced during the Renaissance period it brought about massive changes and fundamentals to art itself of the time and for the future.

3. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text? 4. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?

We learned about these artists within the text and the videos just added and expanded on them and their work much more thoroughly as they focused primarily on each artist respectively. Many different works were shown and examples were given on their reflective time period.

Module 8 Video Review

1. Explain why you selected the video you choose from the selection listed above.

I chose the required video for obvious reasons, and then I chose the Cairo Museum video simply because I really am interested in ancient Egypt. It was a huge topic I learned and researched back in elementary school and have always enjoyed learning about it since then.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

More Human Than Human: The video describes how we let what images that we see have such an impact on us, whether it is in daily life or images from years ago/ the way that we use art to express ourselves.

Cairo Museum: This video explains and goes in depth with some of the ancient artifacts from around the world. One of the most interesting facts I found was that some of the artifacts have been there for over 100 years and still have not been opened!

3. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text? and 4. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?

The video's explore on the book readings and provide specific examples on the key ideas that we have read. Being able to see hands on examples provides a much more clear understanding of the ideas, very helpful. The video's also look specifically and expand on Egyptian/Roman architecture which was covered in the readings. They expand briefly and portray different forms of architecture of the past.

Video Review

1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

Glass Video- How glass is made just amazes me. How someone was able to figure out to make glass out of sand is incredible. Working with materials as hot as they do is very dangerous! I literally watched the guy actually doing the first steps of the glass making and watching the glass form in amazement.

Sculpture Video-  Very, Very interesting to me overall. I was amazed by some of the facts and how long it takes to create one. Every time I pass a piece of stone now I will think that someone is able to turn this into a incredible piece of art. All the planning and rough drafts/practice a sculptor goes through and all the decisions they make is interesting.

2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the topics: Sculpture, Installation, and Craft?

The video's related to the text by teaching some of the same ideas from the text but providing an actual video demonstration with it. The video's went in depth with how the materials are used and the characteristics of each piece of art, as did the text but as I stated, much more in depth on the steps to achieve the final product.

2. When looking at Project #1: (Elements and Principles), did you agree with the element or principle the artist listed with the images? Did you see other elements and principles in the images?

All examples of these students element project were great. Some took me a minute to understand but then I was able to make the connection once I read the caption of each picture. As I made comments on each student's blog I let each of them know what I really liked. I enjoyed the first students picture of movement as I was easily able to make the connection! There was also many pictures I could easily of seen to be used for many other elements as everything has many elements of art, not just one.

3. When looking at Project #2: Where there any images in the Peer Blogs the same as your own? If yes, what were they? Where the reasons the image was selected the same or different as your own?

It's interesting how looking at both art gallery visits and seeing completely different pictures from the ones that I have chosen. Each of our visits were unique and that is what makes art, art! The reasoning behind the pictures chosen were also different and I feel like that is because everyone has a different opinion when they look at things. Even if we were given the same pictures we would all have different view points behind it.

4. Where there any images that your Peers selected that pique your interest now? If yes, what are they and what is your connection with them? What would you want to know about them?

The main image that I will have a thought about for awhile was in the second student's art gallery visit. It is a picture of a large table with chairs. "We are just a small peck on the radar" was a quote the student used to reflect on the image. I then had the same exact thought behind it, we really are just one thing in the world. The world is absolutely huge compared to just a person.

5. What do you think about  the process of reading your peers reflection? Do you find this to be a valuable in your learning?

This is the first time I have really looked at another student's work to review it. It was cool to look at the pictures the other students chose and to look at how they completed the assignment in contrast to how I chose to do it, very valuable learning experience.

6. Check your Blog and read comments posted by your Peers. Do you find their comments helpful?

I have not yet received any comments! :( However, I feel as if any kind of feedback given by my peers will absolutely be helpful!
