1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.
I chose the videos of African Art and Buddhism. I chose African Art because it has always interested me because how much it relates to African Culture and it comes off very unique to me. I chose the video on Buddhism because I have always been interested in the Buddha you see all over the place and wanted to learn more about it as a whole.
2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
African Art- This video discusses how traditions of art were a huge part of daily life and ranges how the culture is expressed ranging from sculptures, masks, architecture, masks and many other things. One of the most interesting things I learned was how African art had such a huge influence to others, even those such as Picasso and other modernist painters.
Buddhism- This video talks about how Buddhism began starting all the way back of it's birth back in India. I learned that the largest Buddhist shrine is located in Indonesia and another one right here in New York State! Another key fact is that within 100 years of Buddha's death, Buddhism then split into two groups; "Hinayana" and "Mahanyana"
3. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text? 4. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?
These videos related to the text by providing some of the same samples and ideas behind that read in the text. The African video specifically went into more details on how props and other cultural symbols are directly symbolized by the African Art. I always like watching the videos as all the main topics and ideas are represented more fully with visual examples and help clear any topics I am touchy on.
